On 6th January 2024, mothers and families of abducted individuals staged protests across major towns in Kenya, to denounce the rising cases of enforced disappearances and mysterious deaths.
The protest, which was organized by mothers, was joined by activists, well-wishers, and politicians, which led to the release of half a dozen of those abducted under mysterious circumstances. The government continues to face criticism and pressure to account for the many Kenyans still missing since June 2024.
This protest echoed the 28th February 1992 one, when women and mothers of the Release Political Prisoners (RPP) Pressure Group staged a major protest calling for the release of 52 political prisoners and proceeded to Uhuru Park for a hunger strike. On June 24, 1992, four of the political prisoners were released, and by January 19, 1993, all of the mothers were reunited with their sons. Our photographer Jimmy Kitiro was in the streets and brought us these images from the protests.
