Global Initiative’s report “The Politics of Crime – Kenya’s Gang Phenomenon” authored by Simone Haysom and Ken Opala shows that criminal gangs have become so widespread in Nairobi and Mombasa, two major Kenyan cities that they even determine the cost and provision of urban services. The coercive groups are even entrenched in politics that aspiring candidates consider it impractical to enter the game without funding gangs of their own.
